Microsoft has released a Community Technology Preview for the replacement of Windows Embedded CE 6 called Windows Embedded Compact 7. Some of the new features are support for ARMv6 and ARMv7, SMP (symmetric multi processor , support for physical memory of up to 4GB, improvements to the various communication stacks, OpenGL ES 2 etc.
But, more than anything, the Compact 7 release denotes a massive shift from GUI to UX. What Windows Embedded Compact 7 brings to the market is a class leading toolset allowing you to easily make fully customized, highly animated and immersive, smooth “user experiences” (UX). By bringing the Silverlight technology into the very core of the OS and integrating support for embedded device UX design into their class leading desktop UX design tool Expression Blend, Windows Embedded Compact 7 has leapfrogged its competitors in this area.
